Quizlet + SMERFCAPS QuizPrep + What Comes to Mind . . .?

Today our sixthnsevenths:
  • Received instruction from the Grade 8 students on using Quizlet to prepare for quizzes:
    • They set up a Quizlet account
    • They made online flash cards on the SMERFCAPS (fields of historical study).
    • They joined the 6-7-8 HLL Class Set at Quizlet.
  • Discussed how each SMERFCAPS usually involves all the other SMERFCAPS as well.
    • For example: Economics involves groups of different kinds of workers (sociology), national defense costs a great deal of money, and soldiers are doing their jobs (military); churches are supported by money offerings (religion); the governments of countries negotiate trade treaties with other countries (foreign relations or diplomacy); entertainers, educators, and others who express themselves through the arts can make a living through these endeavors (culture); buildings cost money (architecture); governments collect taxes and spend enormous amounts of money (politics); inventions and discoveries often cost and sometimes earn money (science).
    • Students will most likely be given a question on tomorrow's Quiz in which they have to discuss interrelationships between one SMERFCAPS and the 8 others.
  • They made, filled out, and illustrated a table as a warmup before beginning to read the packet called "What is History?": The question they answered was, "What comes to mind when you think of 'Texas History?' 'American History?' 'World History?'"
    • They first filled out the table with words.
    • They then did a Bing or Google Images search to see what the search engine brought up when faced with the query, "Texas history," "American history," and "World history."
    • They used the Snipping Tool to snip out as many pictures as they could and pasted the resulting png. into the proper columns of their table.
    • We discussed the items that came to mind and then emphasized that in studying history, it's all too easy to focus on the symbols, terminology, and jargon historians use and lose sight of the fact that in studying history we are studying PEOPLE. We are studying the development of HUMAN societies in time and in space.
Assignment: Thoroughly learn the SMERFCAPS section of the What is History? packet for tomorrow's Quiz. Use Quizlet if you find it helpful, but also feel free to use other methods that help you learn.
